Hi there! I’m Juliann, the owner of Little Orchids.
I grew up in Charlotte, NC before moving to Columbia, SC in 2010. I’m a Paramedic, although I’ve always been more drawn to the birth world. I’ve always felt some sort of calling to deliver babies and help with birth. I actually started out studying biology/pre-med with the goal of eventually becoming an OB/GYN. Through my studies I had the opportunity to speak with practicing OBs, and that was a huge eye opener for me! I began to realize how heavily hospital policies dictate the way many physicians can practice. This can often mean cookie-cutter type care where everyone receives the same interventions and treatments as everyone else due to policy- whether or not the birthing mother actually wants that or medically needs it. Kids weren’t even on my personal radar yet, but I knew being pushed into intervention for policy was something I would never want, and I knew I didn’t want to force anyone else into that. After a lot of research, I found out there are still midwives that deliver babies. They are able to really spend time getting to know their clients, and care is tailored to each individual person. That is EXACTLY what I wanted to do, and I enrolled in midwifery school. A school assignment is also how I heard about doulas, and I trained as a doula in order to better understand and support families through their birthing year. I love both sides of supporting families- both the medical and non-medical sides.
After I had my first child, I realized how little support there may be for new parents. I’m blessed to have amazing friends and family, but not everyone has such a strong group locally. My goal with creating Little Orchids is to relieve some of that stress by bringing many pregnancy, birth, and postpartum resources all under the same roof. Since we are one team, I know exactly who you’ll be working with. I know the quality and expertise of each person I work with, so I hope to help you have the smoothest experience possible. I’m so excited for what we’ve been able to grow here, and I’d love to help support you through whatever you need!
